What foundation is necessary for a garden shed?
In addition to the durable material and workmanship quality, our inexpensive garden sheds have something else in common with the regularly priced models: they need an adequate surface to stand stably. At the same time, a properly laid foundation prevents direct contact between the wood and the ground, which prevents rot.
A full-surface paving foundation, a foundation slab, a strip foundation or a point foundation are possible as the basis for your inexpensive garden house - depending on your budget and local conditions. In the following, you will learn how to install it on your own.
1. Paving stone foundation for your cheap garden house
A full-surface foundation made of exposed concrete slabs or another type of paving stone is easy to build yourself with a little skill. This is due to the simple structure, which offers high stability for your house in the garden despite the simple principle. For the installation you need a vibratory plate, which you can borrow cheaply in most hardware stores.
And this is how you proceed:
- Stake out the area of the garden house and dig a pit that exceeds these dimensions by about 10 cm all around. The depth of the hole should be about 20 to 30 cm.
- Now lay lawn edging as edge formwork in the pit.
- Fill the pit with a layer of gravel until it reaches a height of about 10 to 15 cm. Then pour about 5 to 10 cm of grit over it.
- Take the vibratory plate and run over the gravel and chippings layer to compact it. This creates a firm, even surface as the basis for the paving stones.
- Now lay out the paving stones on the surface. To fill in the gaps between them, you can use grout filler or sand.
- In a final step, run the vibratory plate over the area again and thoroughly fill in any joints again - the full-surface paving stone foundation for your affordable garden house is ready!
2. Foundation slab for your inexpensive garden house
A foundation slab is also easy to lay and is correspondingly popular as a stable substrate for a garden shed. But: Since you are responsible for this Garden Shed Foundation need more concrete than for the other types, you have to plan a little more budget. Another, albeit small, cost factor is the rental fee for the vibratory plate from the hardware store or from a specialized rental service.
Laying a foundation slab is straightforward:
- At the planned location, dig a pit with a depth of about 30 to 35 cm. Make sure that the hole on all sides is about 10 cm larger than the dimensions of the garden shed.
- Place an edge formwork of sturdy boards along the edges of the pit to stabilize it.
- Fill the pit with about 15 cm of gravel and then run the vibratory plate over the layer. As soon as the gravel is compacted, lay out a PE film.
- This is followed by filling with concrete to the upper edge of the pit. Between the layers, you should place a steel mat to reinforce the concrete. The edges of the grid should not protrude beyond the edges of the pit.
- Smooth the concrete with a squeegee to create an absolutely even surface.
- Now all you have to do is wait for the concrete to dry before you can build your cheap garden house on the foundation slab.
3. Strip foundation for your inexpensive garden house
A strip foundation costs slightly less than a foundation slab, as you need less concrete. After all, this variant consists "only" of individual concrete strips that run along the load-bearing walls of the garden house. A high stability and good rot protection of the wood are of course still given.
This is how you lay a strip foundation in the garden:
- Dig a pit about 20 cm deep at the place where your garden house will stand later. Dig another 60 cm further under the load-bearing walls, to the frost-proof depth of 80 cm. The width of the additional excavated area along the walls should be about 30 cm.
- If the soil is loose, you should lay out edge formwork made of squared timber and chipboard to stabilize the pit walls.
- Now fill the deeper pit along the load-bearing walls with concrete. The edge formwork remains in the ground during filling (if you had laid a formwork).
- Once the edges are filled with concrete, proceed to fill the entire remaining hole. Place steel mats between the concrete layers for reinforcement.
- Now all you have to do is dry the mixture thoroughly - and the strip foundation for your cost-effective garden shed is ready!
Hint: If a floor is installed, you must pay attention to the orientation of the internal KDI planks. Otherwise, it can happen that the strips of the foundation are wrong by 90 degrees. The KDI planks must always be aligned parallel to the side walls of the garden shed so that the floor is parallel to the door.
4. Point foundation for your inexpensive garden house
You also need less concrete for a point foundation than for a foundation slab, so you save material and costs. The pillars must be at a distance of about 40 cm from each other – along the walls and in the middle (if a floor is laid) of the future garden house. This distributes the weight of the building evenly.
Attention: In order for this foundation to offer the highest possible stability, the soil must be the same at all excavation points. If this is not the case, a foundation slab or a full-surface paving stone foundation is the better option.
This is how you lay a point foundation in the garden:
- Mark out the dimensions of the garden shed and mark the points where you will dig the holes for the foundation. Pay attention to the distance of 40 cm between the excavation points
- At the marked points, dig square foundation holes measuring 40x40 cm and a depth of about 80 cm.
- If the ground is a little looser, you should place sturdy boards inside the walls of the foundation holes for stabilization. In the case of a solid substrate, this edge formwork is not necessary.
- Now fill all the foundation holes with concrete. The edge formwork (if placed in advance) remains in the holes.
- Wait for the drying time of the concrete - and the point foundation for your cheap garden house is ready!
