System house or log cabin? Differences in structure
The installation of a system house in prefabricated construction is particularly quick and uncomplicated. Horizontal, completely prefabricated wall elements are joined together. Depending on the type of house, a kit contains only up to five parts per side wall. If you opt for a garden house as a plug-and-screw system, individual profiled timbers are connected to each other during assembly. In the case of a Log Garden Shed the individual planks are also put on top of each other and then screwed together. Thanks to the patented 6-Plus corner connection, this is particularly easy and the wall becomes very stable. Learn more about the different Construction methods of log houses in our advice section!
Assemble your own garden shed: assembly step by step
For the construction of your garden house, you should be at least two people. Woodworking skills are an advantage, but not absolutely necessary. Before you can begin, you should carefully read the included assembly instructions from start to finish. We also present you with our Videos on how to build a garden shed to your heart, take a look!
To ensure that the wood does not come into direct contact with the ground and thus cannot rot, you must make a foundation before the actual construction of the garden house. We recommend a foundation slab made of concrete or paving stones.
Preparation: Necessary utensils
To build your garden house, you will need the following tools:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Cordless screwdriver
- Drilling machine with wood drill bit
- Wood saw (jigsaw recommended)
- Folding rule
- Spirit Level
- Head
For some models, it is advisable to have these utensils ready:
- Torx Screwdriver
- Combination pliers
- Carpet knife
- Cord
- Hammer
- Pencil
- Glue and clamps
Building a substructure
You can build the substructure for your garden shed as soon as the foundation has fully hardened.
- Cut the included packaging film into 60-65 mm wide strips. Place these under the floor beams to provide additional protection against rising damp.
- Lay out the wooden beams for the substructure on the foil and connect them to each other using the wood screws and brackets provided. It is particularly important that all corners are right-angled. Our underlays are additionally pressure-impregnated, so that optimal protection against moisture and rot is given.
- Depending on the construction method, the next steps then take place. In log construction, fix the base planks to the floor beams by means of screws. In the case of element construction, I create a corner connection and screw the walls into the floor beam at an angle.
Setting up the walls of the garden house
- First of all, start with the back wall and the side walls.
- Place the individual planks on the base planks, put the planks together and then screw them together. Depending on the model, the resulting connecting edges may be covered by strips. When building a system house with prefabricated wall elements, these are simply screwed to the floor beams and adjacent wall elements. In the case of system houses in the modern plug-and-screw system, the upright strips are attached to the supports at right angles after the floor beams before the individual wall boards are screwed to them.
- Once all wall elements or planks are firmly connected to each other, the windows and door can be installed.
Setting up and covering the roof
The procedure for roof construction differs depending on the shape of the roof. For example, with a gable roof, proceed as follows:
- First, install the gable triangles on the front and back of the garden shed.
- Insert the roof purlins.
- Now put on the supplied roof panels or roof boards and screw them firmly to the roof purlins.
- Which roof covering you use is up to you and also depends on the shape of the roof. You can use roofing felt (also known as bitumen roofing), roof shingles, or self-adhesive roofing foil. For flat or monopitch roofs as well as roofs with a very low roof pitch, there is unfortunately no way to cover this with roof shingles. Installation with a fully adhesive roof covering such as our self-adhesive, aluminium-laminated roof foil or EPDM foil is therefore highly recommended.
- Especially for large roof areas, the installation of a gutter can also be useful. Small garden sheds are well protected from moisture by the large roof evil, so that a gutter is not absolutely necessary.
For other roof shapes, please work exactly according to the instructions in the assembly instructions for the garden house.
Installing solid wood flooring
Once the house is fully assembled, a solid wood floor can be installed if necessary. The planks are nailed directly to the floor beams. So you can always keep the house clean on the one hand.
Apply wood protection
Natural garden sheds must also be treated very quickly with a suitable wood preservative for optimal resistance to weather influences, pests and blue stains. For this purpose, the wood is first primed and then painted twice with open-pore varnish or glaze. You can also pre-treat hard-to-reach areas before installation. This step is not necessary for factory-sealed garden sheds from Karibu. Thanks to the Karibu colour system, the wood is optimally protected.
Important tips for working with wood
Wood is a material with some special features. Therefore, always remember to pre-drill screw connections first so that the wood does not chip or tear. If this cannot be prevented, you can use wood glue.
The following applies to the Karibu log houses: Never connect the planks firmly to each other via several planks, for example with shelves. This is the only way for the wood to expand and contract evenly without causing joints or cracks. This is also very important for the installation of the doors and windows. Connect the door and window moldings only to the door or window and never directly to the logs.
For a beautiful look of the house, also pay attention to whether the screws should be screwed in from the inside or from the outside according to the building instructions. This way you can avoid that unnecessarily many screw heads are visible from the outside. At the same time, the uniform appearance of the woods allows you to create as few points of attack as possible for the weather from the outside.
19 mm System House - Assembly Instructions
Only a few tools are needed for assembly:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Possibly Torx screwdriver (depending on the product)
- Cordless screwdriver
- Drilling machine
- Carpet knife
- Folding rule
- Spirit Level
- Hammer
- Pencil
- Hand saw (possibly jigsaw)
All necessary screws and fittings are included in the kit.
The easy-to-understand building instructions show you how to do it piece by piece.
The great advantage of many Karibu garden sheds lies in the pre-assembly: In our factories, all parts are assembled precisely, you only have to assemble the prefabricated elements, depending on the type of house, this is up to four parts for a side wall.
Your finished garden house can be supplemented at any time with other modules from our modular system: The pitched roof creates a shelter protected from the rain. An add-on cabinet helps to bring order to the house and garden. A covered terrace makes your leisure house "suitable for weekends". And with matching shutters and flower boxes as well as the coloured roof shingles, you can give your house a personal touch.
