What foundation does an outdoor sauna need?
Your garden sauna only has a secure footing if it stands on a stable concrete foundation. There are various ways to plant this in the garden at home. We present you with three variants.
1. Paving Stone Foundation
A popular and frequently used type of foundation for a garden sauna is the paving stone foundation. With the right equipment, it can be set up quickly and offers a high level of stability. Accordingly, around 90% of our customers rely on this foundation variant.
- First, dig a pit about 20 to 30 cm deep (depending on the soil conditions), which is 10 cm larger than the future sauna base area.
- Now lay a border formwork made of lawn borders.
- Then fill the pit with a layer of gravel about 10 to 15 cm thick, followed by a layer of chippings about 5 to 10 cm thick.
- Compaction the gravel-grit mixture with a vibratory plate.
- Lay the paving stones you have chosen (e.g. exposed concrete slabs) over the entire surface.
- Feast the joints with sand or comparable joint filling material.
- Go over the surface again with the vibrating plate, feast on it again and the paving stone foundation for your outdoor sauna is ready.
2. Foundation slab for the outdoor sauna
A foundation slab is most often used for a garden sauna, as it is easy to create yourself. It is also extremely stable, because the load of the sauna is evenly distributed over the surface. However, a larger amount of concrete is required for a foundation slab. Therefore, it is somewhat more expensive than a strip or point foundation.- First, dig a pit about 30 to 35 cm deep, which is 10 cm larger than the future sauna base area.
- Then insert an edge formwork made of robust boards.
- Now fill the pit with a layer of gravel about 15 cm thick.
- Compact the gravel with a vibratory plate and cover it with a PE film.
- Fill the rest of the pit with concrete.
- Insert a steel mat between two layers that does not protrude beyond the edges of the plate. Finally, smooth the surface with a squeegee.
- After drying, the area is ready as a location for your outdoor sauna.
3. Strip foundation for the sauna house
In the case of a strip foundation, a foundation is only laid under the load-bearing walls of the garden sauna. Since less concrete is required than with a foundation slab, a strip foundation is cheaper. On the other hand, the construction is somewhat more complex. To ensure that the concrete remains permanently intact, the strip foundation must be laid at a frost-proof depth of 80 cm.- First, mark out the outer dimensions of the base plate.
- Then dig the soil 20 cm deep.
- Dig a trench under the outer walls at an additional depth of 60 cm and a width of 30 cm.
- Depending on the soil conditions, you will now have to set up additional formwork with chipboard and squared timber.
- Now you can concrete the strip foundation for the sauna house, leaving any formwork in the ground.
- Finally, concrete the area including the gravel layer and steel mat.
- After the drying season, the strip foundation for your outdoor sauna is ready.
4. Point foundation for the garden sauna
A typical point foundation consists of nine individual slabs that are arranged symmetrically along the outer walls and in the middle of the sauna base. A point foundation is only recommended if the subsoil is similar in all places. It is important that the upper edge of the concrete slabs protrudes about 5 cm from the earth. Hint: In the case of a point foundation, a foundation hole must be made every 40 cm. If there is a floor – as is usual with a garden sauna – this requirement also applies to the interior.
- First, mark the places where you want to dig a foundation hole. Note the required distance of 40 cm between the holes.
- Then dig square holes with a side length of about 40 cm and a depth of at least 80 cm.
- If the soil is rather sandy, all foundation holes need cladding made of boards. If the ground conditions are firm, you can do without this intermediate step.
- Fill the square holes with concrete.
- After drying, you can place the garden sauna on the point foundation.
How to properly care for your barrel sauna or sauna house for the garden
Just like a small wooden garden house you also have to take some care of your garden sauna so that it stays beautiful for as long as possible. After all, it is also made of wood, which is not only traditional: wood absorbs the heat evenly during the heating phase and releases it during the heating phase. relaxing sauna sessions evenly. In addition, wood can absorb and hold humidity well, such as that created in a sauna infusion in the room. A sauna house for the garden is always exposed to sun, wind and weather in summer and winter. It is therefore important to protect them optimally from the weather. Therefore, after installation and only from the outside, prime it thoroughly with a primer or with a 3-in-1 glaze. This means that the natural material defies wind and weather better and the garden sauna still looks high-quality and appealing even after many years.
Also important for a long shelf life: Check the garden sauna regularly for damage. It is practical that you can easily sand and repaint pieces of wood with quirks. If you follow these care steps, you will enjoy your cozy Karibu garden sauna for a long time.
