Wood pool pressure impregnation

Maintaining the wooden pool: Pressure impregnation for optimal wood protection in outdoor areas

In addition to the regular Pool maintenance for optimal water quality, the condition of the wooden planks of the Wooden pools regularly.

KDI makes the wood durable for outdoor use

For optimum protection, all wooden elements of the Karibu pools are delivered pressure-impregnated (KDI). Pressure impregnation (KDI) is an effective and ecologically sound wood protection method that also makes moderately durable spruce wood particularly durable and significantly extends its service life outdoors. In this process, liquefied impregnation salts are pressed into the wood under pressure. These penetrate particularly deep into the wood and make the wood resistant to weather influences as well as blue stains, fungi and pests. The wood preservative used by Karibu is chrome-free.

All Karibu pools are made of pressure-impregnated round profile timber with double tongue and groove. The degree of boiler pressure impregnation is divided into different protection classes and varies depending on the type of construction.

Our rectangular pools or built-in pools have the highest protection class 4. They are installed at ground level and therefore require increased protection against moisture in the ground. Of course, they can also be placed in the garden without being embedded in the ground.

KDI changes the surface of the wood

Please note: The green-tinged wood surface caused by KDI may differ in intensity and character. The reason for this is that different types and thicknesses of wood absorb the impregnating salts in very different ways during the process.

Is it necessary to paint the wooden pool despite KDI?

Even if the KDI-treated planks of your wooden pool are optimally protected against the weather, a coat of paint can be useful under certain circumstances.

  • Over time, the surface can change and the wood can turn grey. A coat of paint can serve to refresh the protective effect of the KDI or to visually enhance the wood.
  • If dry cracks have formed in the wood or if it has been damaged during installation, for example by drilling or sawing, an additional protective coating may also be necessary. This is because the impregnation salts do not always penetrate the wood to the core of the KDI. Check the damaged areas and, if necessary, treat them with a protective coating so that it is not at the mercy of external factors.

Painting wooden pool

For the painting of your pressure-impregnated spruce wood, we recommend an aqueous wood protection glaze. This is available in a wide variety of colours. Due to the different substrate conditions and the large number of products available on the market, all paints should be tested in advance. KDI wood can be painted over from a wood moisture content of 25 percent. This means that it must dry well for at least six weeks after the KDI before the paint can be applied. Efflorescence caused by the salts on the surface of the wood should be removed before painting.
