Carport Care

Maintain and protect wooden carports - against wind, weather and the like

Wood protection is essential outdoors. So that your Carport long-term protection against environmental influences such as rain, insects and fungi, it is not only the type of wood that matters, but also the right care. With Karibu you have the choice: Our carports are either available from Pressure-impregnated pine wood at the factory or from high-quality glued wood – both variants are robust, weather-resistant and designed for outdoor use, but differ in their workmanship and care.

Boiler pressure impregnation (KDI) for optimal basic protection

In the KDI process, special wood preservative salts are pressed deep into the wood under high pressure. As a result, the pine wood is protected against blue stain, fungal infestation and pests ex works. The typical greenish colouring is a sign of impregnation – its intensity can vary depending on the wood.
Our KDI pine carports are Ready for installation immediately and do not have to be painted immediately after assembly. The wood preservatives used are of course chrome-free.
(The first coat of a wood protection glaze should at the earliest 6 weeks after assembly – only when the residual moisture is below 25 %).

Glued wood - dimensionally stable and high-quality workmanship

Our glulam carports consist of multi-layer glued wooden elements , which are particularly dimensionally accurate, low-crack and visually elegant. The gluing keeps the wood permanently dimensionally stable – ideal for modern carport constructions with clear lines.

Since glulam not impregnated at the factory , you should open the interface directly after assembly treat with a high-quality wood protection glaze. This protects the wood from moisture, UV radiation and discoloration and significantly extends the life of your carport.

Do I have to paint my KDI carport?

Even if the KDI-treated carport is optimally protected against environmental influences ex works, a additional paint makes sense be:

After a few years, the surface of the pressure-impregnated wood changes – it develops a silvery-grey patina. This is visually harmless, but can be refreshed with a coat of paint.

Inspect your carport regularly. Have Dry cracks or if the wood was damaged during installation, an earlier coat of paint may be necessary. This is because the impregnating agents do not always penetrate to the core of the KDI. With a Targeted protective coating you secure the outer layers sustainably and maintain the protective effect.

Important: KDI wood may only be painted when the residual moisture content is below 25% – i.e. at the earliest 6 weeks after assembly .

What paint do we recommend?

Whether KDI or glued wood: For the treatment of your carport, we recommend the HK glazes from Remmers . They combine wood preservation, impregnation and paint in one product and are available in many shades.

For KDI wood, the following applies: The first coat of paint should at the earliest 6 weeks after assembly – only when the residual moisture is below 25%. Glulam can be treated directly after installation.

Tip: Before painting, you should check the wood surface for resin residues, efflorescence or dirt and remove them if necessary. Also, test the glaze in advance on an inconspicuous area to check the desired color result.

Avoiding moisture from the ground

No matter which variant you choose: When setting up, make sure that posts and wall elements No direct contact with the ground . This is the only way to prevent moisture from rising from the soil into the wood - which can lead to rot in the long term.

It is best to use H-Post Anchor: They ensure a firm footing, enable secure anchoring in the foundation and reliably keep the wood at a distance from the ground. In addition, you should keep the area under the carport clean - leaves, waterlogging and grass on the ground promote moisture and should be removed regularly.

Untreated wood? Take immediate action

If you are using a natural model without factory wood protection, you must even before construction apply a wood preservative – first blue stain protection, then glaze. Without treatment, damage can quickly occur due to moisture, UV light or insects - which also endangers the stability of your carport in the long term.
