Which roof shape suits me best?

When deciding on the shape of the roof, it is not only the appearance that matters. Each roof shape has advantages and disadvantages that you should keep in mind when choosing.

A flat roof is visually particularly simple, but has no slopes, which means that the space underneath can be used optimally. In the case of Karibu, this roof shape nevertheless has a low inclination, which ensures that rainwater drains off at the back. Garden sheds with a gable roof are particularly recommended in areas with harsh weather.

One Shed roof is similar to the Flat roof , but has a larger angle of inclination. This allows rainwater to drain off very well at the back and there are still no significant sloping ceilings that affect the feeling of space.

One Gable roof as a classic roof shape is particularly popular and widespread. The construction that tapers upwards in the middle allows rainwater to drain off on both sides. With our optional pitched roofs and add-on cabinets, you can extend the roof area and thus harmoniously integrate additional storage space.

You can find more information, including on unusual roofs, such as frieze gables, stepped roofs or barrel roofs, on our info page on the Garden house roof shape .

What type of wood is best suited for a garden shed?

Wood is the material of choice for garden sheds: wood is an environmentally friendly, renewable raw material that can be processed very well into individual garden houses. Wooden garden houses blend particularly harmoniously into the natural garden design and set a visual highlight.

In order to keep the price of your garden house within reasonable limits, Karibu uses Nordic spruce wood, which, unlike hardwood, is affordable and particularly stable for a softwood. If it is pre-treated with a primer and a double wood protection coating, Nordic spruce wood is very durable and weatherproof. With the paint of your choice, you can design your garden house according to your individual taste and match your garden.

What is the best way to care for a small wooden garden shed?

To protect your garden house from wind and weather, proper care is essential. If you leave it untreated to the different weather conditions, damage will quickly occur. The wood discolors, becomes brittle, warps, shrinks, swells and rots. Even before assembly, the components that are no longer accessible later must be completely treated from both sides. Only in the case of pressure-impregnated components can double-sided treatment be dispensed with.

First, the wood should be treated with a primer, such as blue stain primer. Then, depending on the manufacturer's specifications of the paint, a double protective coat with a wood protection glaze or an open-pored wood protection paint is usually applied. These coatings should be UV-resistant, breathable, waterproof and open-pored so that the wood can breathe and moisture is regulated. Over time, the wood of the garden house must be treated regularly.

If you want to use the garden shed all year round as a guest room, hobby room or workshop, you should additionally insulate it and create a heating option. You should also make the garden house frost-proof for storing high-quality machines or for overwintering container plants. You can find more about this on our information pages on the Garden Shed Care .

Does a garden shed need a foundation?

To ensure that your garden house is stable, it needs a load-bearing foundation. Only in the case of very small garden sheds may it be sufficient to compact and level the soil. In order to ensure a long durability, however, a proper foundation is also recommended for small wooden garden house models. Otherwise, the garden house will stand directly on the ground and the wood can become damp and damaged.

As a foundation, you can create a slab foundation, a concrete floor slab or a strip foundation. You can find concrete instructions on our info page Garden house foundation.

How do I build a garden house from Karibu?

At Karibu, garden sheds and log houses are supplied as a practical kit. The parts are milled with CNC milling technology so that they can be easily plugged together and screwed together. Each kit contains all the necessary materials including screws and fittings. With the help of the enclosed assembly instructions and a little manual skill, the assembly is quickly done by two people. The process is described on the info page Garden house structure .

Does it make sense to take out insurance for a garden shed?

Wooden houses are exposed to wind and weather in the garden. Hail, lightning and storms can easily damage a garden shed. In addition, there is always the risk of burglary or vandalism. In order to protect yourself from financial damage, in addition to a secure padlock, insurance for your garden shed is also recommended.

A garden shed can either be included in an existing insurance contract, household contents insurance and residential building insurance or insured separately. For more information, please visit our page Garden Shed Insurance .

How big can a garden house be without a building permit?

The size of a garden shed depends on the state building code of your state. For example, there are federal states where a building permit is only required from 75 cubic meters, while in other federal states a permit must be applied for from 10 cubic meters. In addition, it may be that the local development plan provides for further regulations.

Since there are no nationwide rules, it is best to inquire at the responsible local authority about what needs to be considered for your property. Our info page gives you a first overview Garden house building permit .

How far does a garden shed have to be from the border?

Various rules must be observed when building a garden shed. It is also important to maintain the distance areas to the neighboring property. If you don't do this, you may have to dismantle your garden house and move it.

According to the cross-state model building code (MBO), garden houses may be built on the boundary of the property if they do not contain any recreation rooms or fireplaces, the average wall height is max. 3 metres and the total length per property boundary is max. 9 metres. However, there may be state-specific requirements here and the development plan may also specify other rules. Therefore, before buying a garden house, you should find out exactly what the applicable regulations are for your property.

It also makes sense to inform the neighbour about the planned construction of your garden house and, if necessary, to coordinate in order to prevent disputes.

How much does a wooden garden shed cost?

Garden houses are available in a wide variety of price ranges. The price depends, for example, on the wood used, on the quality of the kit, on the size, on the wall thickness and on individual details.

Small garden sheds with an interior area of around 4.5 square metres are available from Karibu from as little as 650 euros, while large models with an interior area of around 40 square metres, gable roof and frieze gable also cost over 5,000 euros. However, such large garden houses can also almost be seen as a real holiday home in the garden and offer plenty of space and comfortable details. Whether luxurious and spacious or one of our affordable Garden Shed Offers – at Karibu you are guaranteed to find a suitable garden house of your choice. Just let yourself be inspired!
